troops on it is side of the militarize zone separating from south korea. as well as nearly 30,000 u.s. forces. not only are they within strikes distance of the launch site, a long-range rocket shows north korea is on its way to developing technology to launch a rocket at the united states's west coast and hawaii. officials tell cnn that the working assumption is that the north koreans got outside help from others, including iran. so today's launch is raising some huge concerns. let's go to our pentagon correspondent barbara starr. i assume they are pretty surprised and alarmed by the successful launch over at the pentagon? >> look, wolf, because of everything you just mentioned, indeed, the u.s. military, the intelligence committee have been watching north korea for days now 24/7 because they did expect to launch and they announced it. but they were having technical problems so a lot thought it wouldn't happen until next week. when it happened last week, there was a surprise. the north korean anchor's excitement was clear. >> announcing the launch of a long-range rocket that put a nor

this morning. it's a big development in the fight against syria and a new level of u.s. involvement. we just learned within the past few hours the defense secretary leon panetta signed an order sending two patriot missile batteries to turkey. that's to assist that nation in defending against any pollible military action by syria. this move was expected as the civil war in syria destabilizes the assad regime with each passing day. in addition to this, 400 u.s. troops are going to turkey. they will be deployed to operate the missile batteries. cnn's nick payton walsh has the development. >> reporter: good morning. 400 personnel will be accompanying the batteries. let me give you history. over the past two months, we saw sporadic exchanges of fire across the border. syrian military firing into turkey causing often destruction and death. turkey often responding. that brought about this request to nato for patriot missile batteries. they're supposed to be there. this particular type better at taking out missiles in the sky rather than taking down aircraft. but this move part of a nato response. a

business correspondent for "u.s. news & world report." i want to ask you about the tax increase if there is no deal and tax rates rise, when would workers begin to see that reflekr reflected in their paychecks? when does the pain start? >> this is not one tax hike. this is about nine different sets of taxes. and the one that would go up right away is the payroll tax. that was cut temporarily in 2 009, cut by two percentage points and will go back up by two percentage points and that would come out of workers' paychecks right off the bat. it would add up to something like $60, $70 a month for the typical worker. we hear about all the tax rates that are going up, that actually wouldn't involve money that is in people's pockets until they actually pay their taxes or do their tax returns the following year. because that's when they would have to calculate the amount they owe and whether they paid enough taxes in 2013. so the good and bad news about that is that is not going to affect people right away, but that also means they can put that one off for a long time and we could go --

. >> this isn't even the first time that a u.s. president has asked for gun laws on assault rifles and those gun clips. what is different this first time around? and will that make a difference? >> i think the difference here is that children were involved. i don't care where you live, who you are, whether you're a gun enthusiast or not. you look at this and say we've got to find a way to prevent this from happening. you know, the nra is saying you need trained security people to protect these schools. other people are saying, no, we need no more guns. is it realistic to think we can eliminate all guns? probably not. you know something? i think we're at a tipping point now where people are saying we need new laws. we need something. something to prevent this. and my feeling is, in the end, they're going to go after these assault weapons and high-capacity clips so that somebody can't go in with a gun that can fire large amounts of ammunition. i think probably that's an area that everybody -- most people will agree with now and then we can move on to the harder questions later. >> sounds like a pl

massacre. the group's ceo went on tv to defend his calls for armed guards in every u.s. school. cnn's barbara starr is with us, the nra has been criticized for not talking about any limitations on guns and calling for armed guards in schools and for not taking questions from reporters. >> yeah, miguel and all of that they seem to be sticking to their line. on the sunday talk shows, wayne la pierre, the chief executive officer. the public face of the national rifle association, made clear on nbc's "meet the press," his organization will continue to oppose legislationed ed adding new revikss to those weapons or the high-capacity ammunition magazines. enter la pierre had a definite view about where he thinks responsibility for some of these issues lie. have a listen. >> i know there's a media machine in this country that wants to blame guns every time something happens. i know there's an anti-second amendment industry in this town. i know there are political leads that for 20 years, always try to say it's because american-owned guns. i'm telling you what i think will make people safe.

very specific attention from both the fbi and the u.s. district attorney in connecticut. today, noelle alba was arrested, charged with lying to federal agents who were investigating her for fraudulent fund-raising activity. here you see her leaving court in hartford, connecticut. she appeared before a u.s. magistrate. she was released on $50,000 bond. if she is convicted, she could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. the fbi's criminal complaint refers to the reporting we did last week, saying quote, on or about december 19th, 2012, cnn's anderson cooper 360 program broadcast a story regarding charity scams and the sandy hook tragedy. alba was a subject of the program and allowed the cnn crew to record her audio voice in response to questions about her involvement with charities to help sandy hook victims. alba claimed that the paypal account listed in the request for donations was not hers, only that she had an account like that. alba claimed she never set up any funds for anybody. the journalist reported that alba claimed she immediately refunded all of the donations
